A study of depressed men and women has found that they respond differently to group therapy.

It was observed that depression, anxiety and other symptoms improved more in women than in men. Men experienced virtually no change in several symptoms and were not as committed to group therapy as women.

It is thought that men may prefer working with a more "remote" therapist in an interpretive, problem-solving approach, which could be difficult in group therapy where intimate disclosure and close relationships are central.

In a study of healthy mountaineers Viagra has been found to protect mountaineers from pulmonary hypertension caused by a lack of oxygen at high altitude.

An increased cardiovascular and exercise capacity during severe hypoxia (oxygen shortage) was observed.

Viagra dilates blood vessels allowing more blood to be pumped through the lungs, helping to alleviate pulmonary hypertension caused by a lack of oxygen.

New research reveals that blood levels of uric acid are an effective predictor of the risk of death for middle aged men.

Usually passed in urine, uric acid is produced from the breakdown of nitrogen compounds. Uric acid is found in high levels in the joints of gout sufferers.

The study suggests that uric acid may be a "danger signal" released by damaged cells, triggering inflammation and a strong immune response.

Men with high uric acid levels had a 2.5 times greater risk of death from cardiovascular disease and 1.7 times greater risk of death from other causes. Adjustments for other health factors did not change the degree of increased risk.

During recent experiments on smoking, it was found that the common cigarette carcinogen, benzopyrene, is related to vitamin A deficiency.

It was hypothesised that smokers develop emphysema because of a vitamin A deficiency.

Increasing dietary vitamin A effectively reduces the risk of emphysema. Long-lived smokers may have their diet to thank.

These varieties of tea can contain around 4,000 compounds like flavonoids which help protect against stroke and heart disease.
It has been found that eating uncooked vegetables without fat inhibits the absorption of carotenoids, the cancer-fighting antioxidants in fruits and vegetables which constitute the red, yellow and orange pigments.

Because carotenoids are fat soluble they cannot be absorbed without fats being present. A study found that when eating salads without fat, virtually no absorption of alpha-carotene, beta-carotene or lycopene takes place. But when salads were eaten with reduced-fat or regular dressing, carotenoid levels went up substantially.

As well as dressing, eating small amounts of avocado or cheese with uncooked vegetables may help carotenoid absorption.

Eating broiled or baked fish once a week means you're statistically 30 percent less likely to develop an irregular heartbeat (atrial fibrillation).

Dietary fish has also been shown to protect against ischemic stroke (stroke caused by blockage of blood supply to brain).

Broiled or baked fish intake increases blood levels of beneficial omega-3 essential fatty acid, but fried fish does not. Fish oil supplements may not provide the same benefits because there could be other unknown components of fish also involved.

A study of male cyclists has found that a carbohydrate and protein sports drink boosts endurance and reduces muscle wear and tear much better than the traditional carbohydrate only sports drink.

Sports drinks with added electrolytes and carbohydrates are effective for long workouts. The study showed that a whey protein enhanced sports drink improved an athlete's endurance by about 11 percent more than a protein-free sports drink.

Less exercise-induced muscle stress was also observed when using the protein enhanced drink. Using such a protein sports drink may help repair muscle fibres and you may feel less sore after a heavy workout.
